Workshops that offer a safe and supportive environment for individuals of all ages to express themselves creatively through visual art and social-emotional learning-based activities. If you would like us to host an Art - a -Day Reach out to us here! Art-a-Day is our short-term engagement program offering art workshops that aim to give participants of all age groups an immersive and joyful experience while creating awareness of the need for Visual Arts and Socio-emotional Learning (SEL). We have organized art engagements in diverse spaces, including museums, art festivals, and various organizations. To date, we organised workshops for 37 partners engaging 3000+ participants in unique art experiences. Our workshops inspired by artists and art forms made art accessible for both adults and children. At the launch of Museum of Solution in December 2023, we organized a paper sculpture workshop where children reflected on space design and what it makes them feel. Exploring that spaces can be designed beyond mere boxes, they re-imagined and crafted sculptures of their favourite places using paper sculpting techniques. Their designs were reflective of their own interpretations of a playground, bedroom, or the city they call home. We facilitated a portrait workshop for young children attending the festival. They reflected on their personalities and how objects or symbols can be used to creatively represent them. Participants created fun whimsical self-portraits to express who they are as individuals. We organised workshops for SVP India’s Mumbai and Pune chapter where artist Henri Matisse and his iconic ‘Drawing with Scissors’ style was explored. In the immersive workshop, participants crafted paper collages about significant moments of their lives. We also sensitized them about the need of creativity, social emotional learning and arts in main stream education. For Pride Month, we facilitated a youth workshop that explored gender norms and representations through the medium of movie posters and how they shape our understanding of identity and sexuality. The youth re-created movie posters by creating a collage with imagery from old magazines and represented stories that were more gender equal, inclusive and stories from reality.

Pioneering in-depth study into inferring student outcomes, best practices and insights from classrooms achieved through engagement in visual-arts in our current context. We aim to identify best practices and gather insights and narratives from our classrooms that can inform how visual arts & SEL can be a crucial medium to build lifelong learning skills and agency to thrive in children. To study this in-depth, we intervened with students from a local government school by providing them regular access to Visual arts and SEL from Grades 1-8 Opportunities for exposure through excursions Book a Smile India invited us for a unique art workshop led by renowned Italian artist Lorenzo Vitturi as a part of the Olympics In Reel Life Festival by the Film Heritage Foundation. Through Art labs we took 5 children for this workshop where they gathered materials from the ground - waste, leaves, feathers, and more - to create unique collages. Lorenzo captured and guided the children to click portraits, merging everything together to create artwork from their imagination. The result? Extraordinary masterpieces! - Our Why | Saturday Art Class
"The arts are about the qualities of human experiences. Through music, dance, visual arts, drama, and the rest, we give form to our feelings and thoughts about ourselves, and how we experience the world around us." -Sir Ken Robinson Our Current Reality Today in India, the National Education Policy, 2020, recommends a holistic & art integration approach in education, but the reality on ground is, 300 out of 400 schools in Metropolis city of Mumbai do not have an art teacher. Nationwide availability remains uncertain. Educators are expected to conduct art class, but lack tools & support hindering their ability in classrooms. There is absence of visual art & SEL curriculum that focuses on mindset building & fostering wellbeing. What happens to a child because of these problems? A child within such a system, experiences the lack of an outlet to voice out what they truly want in their education journey. They are not exposed to working with tools and methods that feed into creative thinking, imagination and collaboration. They often grow up to experience low levels of confidence, struggle with communication, building and maintaining healthy relationships & collectively problem solving. This deprivation of holistic and creative learning, hampers their journey as a student in the education system. How does it also affect an educator? Educators feel helpless not knowing how they can create safe and joyful spaces of learning for their students. This is due to the lack of contextualized resources and training in order to cater to student's current needs. Educators also feel overburdened by numerous responsibilities and find themselves unable to learn and grow This restricts them from adopting and practicing innovative learning methodologies. Our Solution To bridge the gap of art education, we implement policy recommendations for holistic learning through visual arts & SEL education, partnering with state governments, educational institutions & grassroot non-profits. Visual Art & SEL Curriculum development Research & Development in visual arts & SEL education Teacher Training, with real-time technology support Stakeholder Engagement & Awareness workshops Our relevance in the National Education Policy 2020 The National Education Policy lists several benefits of a higher quality education system that promotes multidisciplinary learning. It highlights the need for setting up an education system that promotes the holistic scientific and creative development of individuals. The Saturday Art Class School Curriculum and our model approach for our flagship programs directly contributes to the National Education Policy and addresses various components of the policy, specifically talking about bringing arts into our schools. Following are some key statements that align with 'Our Why' : 4.7 As a part of the thrust on experiential learning , art-integrated education will be embedded in classroom transactions not only for creating joyful classrooms, but also for imbibing the Indian ethos through integration of Indian art and culture in the teaching and learning process at every level. 22.3. The arts form a major medium for imparting culture. The arts - besides strengthening cultural identity, awareness, and uplifting societies - are well known to enhance cognitive and creative abilities in individuals and increase individual happiness.

This problem affects over 250 million children attending government and low-income private schools, (Ministry of Education, Government of India, 2020) who lack safe spaces for expression and the agency to thrive. The Gaps in India’s Education System? 99th Lack of Art Teachers The UNESCO Report (2021) highlights the nation-wide deprioritization of art education, leading to academic educators at these schools to conduct art class without necessary tools and support Absence of Curriculum The lack of a government prescribed curriculum focusing on mindset building hinders schools from effectively implementing learning opportunity, depriving children of essential development tools.
